RAF Telegraphist

Mike Brogan served 3 years as a Telegraphist in the days when Morse code was still the go !
Read his story of what he calls "glorified" National Service.

Squadron Leader Jack Riley RAF Rtd.  joined the RAF in 1944 and was posted to Burma as a Signals/Linguist(Japanese). His mission was to intercept Japanese radio transmissions and translate them to English. When the war ceased Jack was commissioned and transferred to Air Movements. Jack now lives in Australia. After a lengthy stint in New Zealand he finally saw the light and moved to a tropical paradise !
Being the most senior member, Jack has graciously accepted the role of Honorary Chairman of Tony Gale's UKMAMSOBA site

Derek Lehrle was a National Service signaller who spent all his service at  RAF Chia Keng in Singapore. Chia Keng was the Signals Receiving Centre for the RAF on the island. His site is very descriptive and contains lots of photos from that time.
He is also a Jaguar and Rover car enthusiast which can be seen from his site name !!

Tony Sirrell was a Telegraphist and 'swanned' away his service career on the island paradise of Gan which was a 'down route' refuelling stop for Transport Command en route to the Far East and Australia.

BBC World War 2 Website.

Have you got a story to tell from the war years? This BBC website encourages the general public to post their 'war' stories to be preserved for future generations. My personal story involves the time I spent as an evacuee in a country mansion at Linlithgow north of Edinburgh. The fantastic outcome of this was that I was able to re-aquaint myself with my teacher and her husband, who both feature in my story, after 60+years !

Gerald Finlay was a National Serviceman between 1957 and 1959. Gerry served at RAF Topcliffe after trade training at RAF Yatesbury and 'square bashing' at RAF West Kirby. He has some great photos from the time. Did you see yourself in one ?

RAF West Kirby Association

This site is for all those who either did service at West Kirby or who passed through there on their basic training course which we used to call "square bashing"!! Reunions and much nostalgia are available to all those who either love or hate the place.

Les Haines   is involved with the RAF West Kirby Assn. and served during the time of the Berlin Airlift. His new site (still under construction) will evoke memories of that time during the Cold War and service in Germany. Great photos. I wish the RAF had retained the forage cap during my service........I just missed out and ended up with a 'prissy' beret!!

John (Gary) Cooper has a couple of sites well worth a visit. Read the story and his ongoing battle with MoD about his prang in a Hastings off Gan back in 1960. He was on his way home, Tourex from Katunayake, Ceylon via Gan when disaster struck......................

http://splashdown2.tripod.com/

John has also recently started a web Forum for matters RAF. You might be surprised who you could run into while visiting this site. The main topic at the moment is the PJM (Pingat Jasa Malaysia) Medal awarded to qualifying British and Commonwealth servicemen for their contribution to the orderly transition to Independence. Initially the UK Gov. refused to accept this award but after a huge outcry they have relented. However they are now saying that recipients are not permitted to wear the medal alongside any other campaign or service awards. Read the latest on John's RAF Forum here..............

http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=46291

A team of ex-servicemen has a website which is in support of the right to wear the PJM. A site of interest to all those who served in Malaya, Singapore and Borneo particularly during the 'confrontation'. Read all about the "bloodymindedness" of the bureaucrats that were not even born when all services were fighting and dying to preserve the freedom they now enjoy.
